Manchester’s evolution from rag trade to e-commerce riches

Online titan Amazon announced on 19 October that it will be opening a corporate office in Manchester in 2019 in a further boost to the city’s credentials as an emerging digital and e-commerce powerhouse.

Manchester’s historic Hanover Building situated in the city’s Noma district will provide a home to at least 600 new corporate and research and development (R&D) roles in a move secretary of state for digital, culture, media and sport, Jeremy Wright, described as “a vote of confidence in [the UK’s] world-leading skills in tech innovation”.


Traditional financial services firms face extinction within 12 years

In 12 years’ time, 80% of the traditional financial services firms existing today will either disappear or become shells of their current standing if they continue as they are.

According to research by Gartner, some will go out of business or become commoditised, while others will exist but be uncompetitive because of the rise of financial technology (fintech).


Police tech is ‘a complete and utter mess’, says Home Affairs Committee

The lack of digital capabilities in the UK’s police forces has become a “systemic problem”, according to the Home Affairs Committee.

In its report Policing for the future, the committee found that most forces are struggling with out-of-date technology and poor digital capabilities.  

A lack of digital capability is evident across different fields, including online fraud, cyber security and child sexual abuse, the report found.

The committee said it has “serious concerns about the police service’s digital capabilities, including the skills base of officers and staff and the technological solutions available to them”.
